Embroidery tutorial : "HAPPY MUM" or "GIRL POWER" (free designs) - Joli Lab

Ultra trendy on Instagram and Pinterest, embroidery is a quick and easy way to personalize your creations and make them 100% unique.

In this article, we propose a tutorial embroidery accessible to beginners. We have chosen a simple design and an easy stitch. No need to be an embroidery pro.

And since there's nothing better than a "HAPPY MUM"or"GIRL POWER"To motivate us on a daily basis, we offer you these two beautiful designs.

You will be able to download the printable designs by clicking on the link later in the article.

The equipment

You will first have to choose a backing for your embroidery. You can very well take a t-shirt or one sweatshirt (our sweatshirt Goji for example). We just advise you to avoid jerseys that are too thin and to use an embroidery drum. If you are a seamstress, the design will also look very nice embroidered on a hand-sewn case.

Once you have chosen your support, you will need to bring :

  • drum
  • a piece of solufix or any other water-soluble film (you transfer the design to be embroidered onto the film that you stick on the area to be embroidered. Once the work is finished, the film is simply removed with cold water).
  • an embroidery needle
  • thread to embroider in the colour of your choice (ideally DMC embroidery)

Tuto to realize your embroidery

Step 1: Print both designs as a free download (scale print or 100%) :

Step 2 : Take your backing and embroidery supplies :

    1. Transfer one of the two motifs by transparency onto a water-soluble film such as solufix using a frixion pen (heat-erasable) or a thin water-erasable felt pen (it is also possible to print it with an inkjet printer).
    2. Place the water-soluble film on the fabric and then the fabric in a drum, pull the edges slightly so that it is taut and off you go!
    3. Take a piece of embroidery material thread about 1m long and fold it in half. Insert both ends of the thread into the eye of your needle. Start at the top of the heart*. Start your embroidery by passing your needle from the wrong side to the right side at the left end of the design (or the right end if this direction seems more intuitive). Stitch again and make a knot on the wrong side using the loop formed by the two folded strands (see diagram). *The patterns are broken down into 4 zones (top of the heart, bottom of the heart, first word, second word). At the end of each zone, stop your thread by making a knot on the backside or by passing the thread 3 to 4 times under the last stitches, always on the backside (cf. technique of the overcast back stitch explained in the next step).
    4. Embroider your design in overcast back stitch. This ideal stitch for text is easy to make and produces sharp curves and lines. It is done in two steps:
      1. Embroider a first area in the back stitch. Use the following diagram to visualize the technique.
      2. Once this first area is embroidered, overcast it. Start from the reverse side of the backing. Bring your needle out under the last stitch you embroidered, towards the middle. Then slide your needle under each stitch from top to bottom, without stitching the backing (staying right-side up).
    5. Once your embroidery is finished, run your backing under water until the water-soluble film is completely dissolved and dry it. That's it, you can proudly wear your creation!

We hope you enjoyed the tutorial!
