Video sewing tutorial : Easily lining a top or a dress
When you're new to sewing, learning how to double your clothes can be very useful to enhance the opacity of a pretty printed viscose or to make an outfit a little more dressy for a special occasion. Knowing how to double a garment can also help you get rid of the bias, a tedious step with slippery fabrics.
We are going to explain you in video the method we use to double tops or sleeveless dresses.
This tutorial is for you if:
- you want to line any sleeveless, collarless top or dress with straps that are at least 3 cm wide at the shoulder seam.
- you bought our pattern PLUM (alone or in kit form) and you want to make option C or D (the buttoning tab is not an extra difficulty, you will just have 4 pieces in front and not 2 as in the video). As a bonus we explain at the end of the article how to make Plum in a long double basque dress with a single neckline.
Don't forget to turn on the sound, we explain everything in detail (duration of the video: less than 4 minutes)...
AS A BONUS: TUTO FEATHER DRESS WITH DOUBLE BASQUE
If you want to make in a few hours this pretty summer long dress (knot optional) from our pattern Plum it's very simple:
- for the front, take the piece n°5, remove a 2.5cm wide strip corresponding to the area provided for the button tab (this is the same as cutting on the "middle front" line). Cut twice in the fold (or once in the fabric and once in the lining).
- for the back, cut piece no. 6 twice in the fold (or once in the fabric and once in the lining)
- to make the first basque, cut two pieces n°7 dress length (= piece n°7 lengthened by 27cm as shown on the pattern)
- for the smaller basque at the bottom of the dress, cut again two pieces n°7, this time in blouse length, whose width you will have increased beforehand (x1,3)
Follow the steps in the video tutorial earlier in the article to make the top of the dress. To assemble the basques and make the knot (optional), refer to the assembly guide provided with our pattern Plum.

video au top .
The explanations are super clear
I doubled the top of a dress in no time at all.
I had assembled one of the sides, so it was no problem.
Thanks a lot!
