Video sewing tutorial: Easily line a top or dress

Tuto couture vidéo : Doubler facilement un top ou une robe - Joli Lab

When you're starting out in sewing, learning how to line your clothes can be very useful to increase the opacity of a pretty printed viscose or to make a slightly more formal outfit for a special occasion. Knowing how to line a garment can also allow you to avoid having to put bias binding, a somewhat tedious step with slippery fabrics.

We will explain to you in video the method we use to line sleeveless tops or dresses .

This tutorial is for you if:

  • you want to line any sleeveless, collarless top or dress, whose straps measure at least 3 cm wide at the shoulder seam.
  • you have purchased our PLUM pattern ( alone or in a kit ) and you want to make option C or D (the button placket does not pose an additional difficulty, you will just have 4 front pieces and not 2 as in the video). As a bonus, we explain at the end of the article how to make Plum into a long dress with a double peplum and a simple neckline.

Don't forget to turn on the sound, we'll explain everything in detail (video length: less than 4 minutes)...

BONUS: TUTORIAL FOR A PLUM DRESS WITH DOUBLE BASQUE

If you want to make this pretty long summer dress (bow optional) in a few hours using our Plum pattern, it's very simple:

  • for the front, take piece #5, remove a 2.5cm wide strip corresponding to the area intended for the button placket (which is equivalent to cutting on the "center front" line). Cut twice on the fold (or once in the fabric and once in the lining)
  • for the back, cut piece #6 twice on the fold (or once in the fabric and once in the lining)
  • to make the first basque, cut two pieces n°7 dress length (= piece n°7 extended by 27cm as indicated on the pattern)
  • for the smaller basque at the bottom of the dress, cut two more pieces no. 7, this time in blouse length, the width of which you will have previously increased (x1.3)

Follow the steps in the video tutorial above in the article to make the top of the dress. To assemble the basques and make the bow (optional), refer to the assembly guide provided with our Plum pattern.
